Configuring your Browser to launch Alice Data Files |

These instructions will help you set up a Netscape Navigator browser to automatically launch the Alice Data Tools Software when you retrieve data from a Community
Web project. Strenuous efforts have been made by thousands of software engineers to
make this easy to do; nonetheless it may still be confusing. If you discover
you need assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us via e-mail or call to 1-800-277-8372 and ask for "Alice Tech Support." 1) Open Netscape. 2) Using the mouse, go to the top of the screen, and click on the Options menu. 3) From the Options menu, choose "Preferences". 4) When the Preferences window appears, click on the narrow rectangular box at the top of the window. A list of choices will appear below. Choose "Helper Applications". ![]() 5) When the Helper Applications screen appears, you will see that it is crowded with a list of helper applications, buttons and other information. This area is where you can specify what you want the Netscape software to do when it receives files of different types. Here you will create a new entry, specifying what Netscape is to do with Alice data files. ![]() 6) Click on the button entitled "New". ![]() 7) A small dialogue box will appear, asking you for two pieces of information, Mime Type and Mime Subtype. For Mime Type, enter "application". For Mime Subtype, enter "Alice". (Please type exactly as it appears: lower case"a" in application; upper case "A" in Alice.) Click OK. 8) Now you will see a new entry in the list of helper applications, that says application/alice, but with the word "Unknown" under the headings "Application" and "Action". To choose the software application you want Netscape to launch, do the following: 9) At the bottom of the screen, you will see a list of buttons indicating action choices. Click on "Launch Application". 10) To choose which application to launch, click the "Browse" button. When the list of files appears, navigate your way to where you have Alice 2.5 located. Click once on Alice 2.5 to select it, then click "Open". 11) Finally, make sure that the File Type box at the right side of the screen reads "TEXT". If it says anything else, click on the box to see other choices, and choose "TEXT". 12) Click OK to exit and record the changes.
