Now that you've seen some of the benefits of telecollaboration, here are a few projects to explore. Most are open to all participants.
For each, a brief description is given, along with a link to the project's web site.
- Global School Net Project Registry
-
Focus: Student Projects Subjects: All Grades: K-12
Global School Net has created a clearinghouse--"the one central place on the Internet where you can find projects from the Global SchoolNet Foundation and other organizations such as I*EARN, IECC, NASA, GLOBE, Academy One, TIES, Tenet, TERC, as well as countless outstanding projects conducted by classroom teachers all over the world."
- National Student Research Center
-
Focus: Student Projects Subjects: Science Grades: 4-12
The National Student Research Center (NSRC) is dedicated to promoting student research and the use of "the scientific method." Abstracts of scientific investigations conducted by students may be published in a quarterly electronic journal published by students at the Mandeville (Louisiana) Middle School. Copies of the journal are available online at their web site.
- I*EARN
-
Focus: Student Projects Subjects: Social Studies, Language Arts, Science Grades:K-12
I*EARN (International Education and Resource Network) links more than 1,000 schools in over 20 countries. Projects are designed to help students "discover that you CAN make a meaningful difference in the health and welfare of people and the planet."
- Math Forum
-
Focus: Teacher Community, Student Projects Subject: Math Grades: K-12
The Math Forum, based at Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania, seeks to be "a virtual math education and technology transfer center." Many teacher resources can be located here, as well as projects such as the Elementary Problem of the Week, the Geometry Problem of the Week, and the Internet Geometry Hunt. Student mentoring arrangements (high school to elementary school) can also be pursued here.
- Journey North
- Focus: Student Projects Subjects: Science, Math, Geography Grades: 4-12
Interested in nature, math, or geography? In this project "classrooms across North America track the incredible journeys of a dozen migratory species each spring as part of the Journey North project. In addition to studying migration, students observe the local emergence of spring through studies of changing day length, temperatures, plant growth and other signs of spring. Students share their own field observations with classrooms across the Hemisphere. In addition, they are linked with scientists who provide their expertise directly to students and educators."
- IECC
-
Focus: Student Projects Subjects: All Grades: K-12
Looking to hook up with a particular type of class? The IECC (Intercultural E-Mail Classroom Connections) mailing lists are "a free service to help teachers and classes link with partners in other countries and cultures for e-mail classroom pen-pal and project exchanges." Their web site may also be searched to review previous mailing list postings. Traffic can be somewhat heavy (a couple of dozen postings a week).
- Electronic School House
-
Focus: Teacher Community, Student Projects Subjects: All Grades: K-12
The Electronic School House (ESH) is located on America Online. Participants can participate in any of several weekly online chats, download educational programs and files, and particpate in telecollaborative projects. America Online membership and software is required to participate in ESH.
- EnviroNet
-
Focus:Student Projects Subjects: Interdisciplinary Grades: K-12
EnvironNet is a network of students, teachers, scientists, environmental educators and
others who utilize telecommunications to enhance environmental science education. Click on list of monitoring projects to engage in data sharing projects.
- Blue Ice: Focus on Antarctica, Food Webs
-
Focus:Student Projects Subjects: Science, geography, language arts, social studies, history Grades: 4-12
Take a virtual visit to Antarctica to learn of the fascinating interrelationship between the animals of the Antarctic and their environment. This is a program packed with information and daily activities. Basic Subscription is $120. There is a discount available if you take both Blue Ice units.
- LabNet
-
Focus: Teacher Community, Student Projects Subjects: Math, Science, Computers Grades: 7-12
LabNet uses telecommunications to provide an electronic meeting place in which teachers can support each other in experimenting with new teaching strategies, reflect on their teaching experiences, problem solve, share resources, build collegial connections with their peers, and take part in professional development. Teachers may join for $50 per year.
- Global Lab
- Focus: Student Projects Subjects: Science Grades: 7-12
Global Lab brings together a diverse group of students, teachers, and scientists from around the world to work together on global environmental issues, such as atmospheric ozone levels, radon concentrations, and weather patterns. Classes may participate in the year-long project for a membership fee.
- Netucate
-
Focus:Student Projects Subjects: Science, geography, language arts, social studies, history Grades: 4-12
A new place for finding on-line projects for teachers and students. Starting this fall--"We Don t Need No Education": Students will log how much time they spend on homework and will report the data. Then they will write a comparison/contrast paper. With an e-mail partner, they will edit these papers. The best papers will be published to the web site.
TERC's Testbed for Telecollaboration is funded by the National Science Foundation to develop innovative tools and curriculum in support of telecollaboration. These projects are currently in development. For more information on these projects, follow the links provided.
- Classroom Feederwatch
-
Focus: Student Projects Subjects: Science, Math, Language Arts, Computers Grades: 3-8
Classroom FeederWatch, an interdisciplinary science curriculum developed by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology (CLO) and TERC, gives students in elementary and middle grades the opportunity to experience scientific research in their classrooms. As Classroom FeederWatchers, students set up feeders in their schoolyards, learn to identify and count the numbers of birds that visit, and share their data on a network with scientists at CLO and with other students across the country.
- Kids Network: Leveraging Learning
- Focus: Student Projects Subjects: Math, Science, Computers Grades: 4-6
The National Geographic Kids Network is a telecommunications-based science curriculum which allows students in grades 4-6 to learn science content and process as they conduct hands-on investigations and share data and ideas with students on a computer network. With Leveraging Learning, TERC in collaboration with the NETWORK and the National Geographic Society, will develop new materials to extend the Kids Network Units.
Schools on the Web
As the popularity of the Internet in the classroom grows, schools and school districts are gaining a presence. We suggest that you look at Schools of the Future, coordinated by the Victoria (Australia) Directorate of Education an exemplary district level Website, and provide a pointer to Web 66, a clearinghouse of school-based Web pages.
Each of these will give you great ideas on how to get your school or school district on the Web.
