The following are good sites for both accessing useful data sets and engaging students in compelling data analysis problems.
The Data Library Compiled by Swarthmore's Math Forum, this site contains a large collection of both data sharing projects and data sets. The Statistical Instruction Internet Palette Especially useful is Dr. B's Wide World of Web Data--this is not an exhaustive list of possible links, but a current list of what are considered "good" links -- interpretable, interesting, and manageable data. Chance News Chance News uses current news stories to illustrate certain statistical concepts, by questioning the validity of some of the conclusions reached in these news articles. Office for Mathematics, Science, and Technology Education at University of Illinois This site offers, among other things, many K-12 statistical analysis problems, many of which are linked directly to the sites from which authentic data sets were retrieved. Data and Story Library DASL is an online library of datafiles and stories that illustrate the use of basic statistical methods. Data Hints These hints should help answer some data analysis questions; specifically, which graphs are appropriate for analyzing which types of data? These hints were designed to guide members of the EnergyNet project, one of the Testbed's Community Webs. Statistics Education Research at the University of Washington Using NCSA's HyperNews, this group collaborates in order to solve statistical problems and discusses techniques of statistics instruction. The Explorer Click on Mathematics Curriculum, then Data-Collection-Organization which is listed under the heading Statistics and Probability.
