The current modules include an introductory unit on Mars and Planetary Exploration and two
units investigating Volcanoes and Valleys, and Canyons and Channels.
The introductory unit builds a foundation for both investigative modules.
Depending on how you pace the activities, this sequence of the introductory
and one investigative unit could take from four to six weeks.
All modules use activities to engage students in the excitement of the exploration of Mars through hands-on, discovery-oriented learning. The units develop students' image and data analysis skills using images and data from the Viking and Mariner missions. They also provide a foundation in the skills and background essential for planetary studies. Students confront preconceptions, refine questions for investigation, construct meaning from images and data, develop hypotheses, collect evidence in support of hypotheses, and synthesize understanding. After completing the introductory module, teachers choose one (or both) of the follow-up modules. This partial set of materials is being field tested a year prior to the scheduled arrival of the first two probes, and the full set of materials will be available September, 1996.
